The 20' s and 30' s avant-garde - Prague and Moscow

The relationship between Czech and Russian avantgarde has not been properly examined, therefore the aim of this research was to understand the real facts and uncover “ the blind spots“ connected with the specific development of avantgarde architecture in Czechoslovakia and Soviet Union. A comprehensive and moreless thorough detailed reconstruction of the interwar period has been created with the help of comparative and historiographic analysis. This period used to be interpreted quite contrarily under the political pressure of the Soviet regime. The thesis analyses the influence of the political regime on architecture, determines the reflection of the events in the Soviet Union on the opinions of Czechoslovak architects by means of testimonies about mutual contacts, mutual criticism and cooperation in the sphere of architecture. The thesis brings and concludes new information regarding Czech architects who were designing and working in the Soviet Union. The research is based on archive documents, articles from specialized contemporary magazines and debates between Czech and Russian architects.

The 1980 Olympic Games and its Reflection of Soviet Foreign Policy

1 Abstract The thesis examines the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 and their subsequent boycott. This significant sporting event was adversely affected by the Soviet military intervention in Afghanistan at the end of 1979. In response, the USA and several other countries decided to boycott the Moscow Olympics, with a total of 65 nations choosing not to participate, making it the largest boycott in the history of the Olympic Games. To understand the context, the international political situation in the 1980s is analyzed, along with the subsequent reasons for the boycott. The thesis also provides important facts regarding the organization of the Games (such as facilities, venues, the Olympic Village), the Soviet Union's preparations for the 22nd Olympic Games in Moscow, and the subsequent response of Soviet diplomacy to the boycott. A section of the thesis is dedicated to three athletes, of whom only one could participate in the Olympics. The objective of this work was not only to describe Soviet foreign policy but also to illustrate how sports can be exploited for propaganda. In the context of the Olympic Games, the relationship between the Soviet Union and not only the USA but also other countries is reflected. Czechoslovak Diplomacy and Israel in 1948-1967

Noemi Krausová Bachelor thesis Czechoslovak Diplomacy and Israel in 1948 - 1967 2015 Abstract This bachelor thesis focuses on the development of Czechoslovak-Israeli diplomatic relations from 1948 until 1967. Czechoslovakia supported the Jewish community in Palestine in the first years after the Second World War and was promoting the idea of a Jewish state. The friendly attitude on the part of Czechoslovakia was not altered after the communist coup in 1948. Czechoslovakia became the only state to support Israel, by supplying arms, during the War of Independence of 1948/49. Since 1950, however, the Czechoslovak attitude towards Israel began to change under the Soviet influence which was clearly dominant in the internal as well as external policies of the communist regime in Prague. The relations with Israel gradually deteriorated after 1950 as Zionism was declared as an enemy by the communist power. The anti-Zionism of the regime became most pronounced during the political trial against the former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, Rudolf Slánský, as well as against other - mostly Jewish - party officials in 1952. The Geopolitics of Photography Exhibitions. Showcasing Soviet Photographers in Interwar Czechoslovakia

This paper presents interwar exhibitions of photography as spaces of exchange, self-promotion, and competition for recognition in the heart of a global geopolitics of photography. Focusing on the participation of Soviet photographers at several large-scale international exhibitions organized in Czechoslovakia in the 1930s, it shows that both the Czech and Soviet organizers took advantage of exhibitions to serve their respective interests: The Soviet Union to strengthen its cultural diplomacy, and the Czech supporters of Soviet photography to popularize functional and committed photographic approaches among their fellow countrymen.

Margaret Thatcher's foreign policy in domestic and foreign press between 1979 and 1990

This master's thesis will focus on Margaret Thatcher's foreign policy, starting with her appointment as Prime minister of Great Britain in 1979 and ending with her resignation in 1990. Next it will reflect on the social and political situation in Europe during her reign. The key element of this paper will be the analysis of domestic and foreign press, both democratic and communist, in which the student will target the Falkland war, policy towards European Economic Community, the North Ireland conflict solution, attitude towards African continent and the Soviet Union, the Persian Gulf war and also special relationship between the Great Britain and United States of America. The goal of the student's research shall be a complex overview of the press in the period in question, put into the context of foreign policy of the first woman in charge of Great Britain.

Collapse of the USSR - Russsian national tragedy? Analysis of the Russian public opinion on the dissolution of the Soviet Union

Bachelor thesis Collapse of the USSR - Russian national tragedy? Analysis of the Russian public opinion on the dissolution of the Soviet Union discusses the Russian public opinion development about the end of the Soviet Union during the presidency of Boris Yeltsin (1991 - 1999) and Vladimir Putin (2000 - 2008). The first chapter illustrates the situation in Russia after the collapse of the USSR; afterwards it describes the social, political and economic situation of the country during mentioned periods. Based on the available opinion polls and academic works the second part of the thesis examines the shift in Russian understanding of the collapse of the Soviet Union. The fundamental premise of this thesis is the idea that the end of the USSR was Russian national tragedy. After the analysis author concludes that in Russian society during the presidency of both Yeltsin and Putin remained a basic level of post- Soviet nostalgia, yet it wasn't a national tragedy. START Treaties: Really so Necessary? (1982/91-2010)

The presented bachelor thesis deals with the issues of American-Soviet (Russian) weapons reduction treaties START, i.e. since the early preparations of the first treaty to the ratification of the third treaty. The goal of this thesis is especially to analyze the texts of the treaties and show their impact on the nuclear arsenals of both countries. Besides the analysis of the treaties, author will also show the reflection and the impact of the treaties on the other countries and other non-proliferation processes.
